God's Covenant With Man

How the New Covenant Fulfilled the Old Covenant

In the Bible, God made two major promises, or covenants, with His people. These covenants show how God kept His word and brought His plans for humanity to life.

The Old Covenant

Made with: The Israelites through Moses at Mount Sinai (Exodus 19:5-6).

Key Features:

  • God gave the Ten Commandments as a moral guide (Exodus 20:1-17).
  • Laws included worship, sacrifices, and how to live (Leviticus 1:2-4).
  • Blessings were promised for obedience, and consequences for disobedience (Deuteronomy 28:1-2, 15).
  • Forgiveness required regular animal sacrifices (Leviticus 16:15-16).

Purpose: To teach God’s holiness and humanity’s need for forgiveness (Leviticus 19:2).

The New Covenant

Made with: Everyone through Jesus Christ (John 3:16).

Key Features:

  • Jesus said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood” (Luke 22:20).
  • His sacrifice on the cross replaced animal sacrifices (Hebrews 9:12).
  • The focus shifted from following laws to faith in Jesus and a personal relationship with God (Romans 10:9).

Purpose: To offer forgiveness, grace, and eternal life for all who believe (Ephesians 1:7).

How the New Covenant Fulfilled the Old Covenant

  • The New Covenant completed the promises of the Old Covenant (Matthew 5:17).
  • Jesus’ death provided ultimate forgiveness, replacing animal sacrifices (Hebrews 10:10).
  • The focus moved from external rules to grace and faith, making God’s promise available to everyone (Galatians 3:28-29).

A.W. Tozer (1897–1963)

"What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us."

Charles Spurgeon (1834–1892)

"Jesus is the fountain of living water; drink deeply."

G.K. Chesterton (1874–1936)

Oswald Chambers (1874–1917)

"Faith never knows where it is being led, but it loves and knows the One who is leading."

1. The Old Covenant

First Covenant, also called the Mosaic Covenant

The First Covenant, also called the Mosaic Covenant, is a key agreement between God and the Israelites, given through Moses at Mount Sinai. It establishes the relationship between God and His chosen people and is central to the books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. Here's a simplified explanation:

What is a Covenant?

  • A covenant is like a formal agreement between God and His people.
  • The First Covenant included laws, rituals, and promises. The Israelites agreed to obey God, and He promised to bless and protect them.

Key Features of the First Covenant

The Ten Commandments

  • Foundational rules given by God to guide the Israelites (Exodus 20:1-17).
  • Examples: Honor parents, keep the Sabbath holy, and do not steal or kill.

Other Laws and Rituals

  • Covered daily life, worship, and sacrifices (Leviticus 1-7).
  • Examples: Dietary restrictions, instructions for offerings, and social justice laws.

The Tabernacle

  • A portable sanctuary for worship (Exodus 25:8).
  • Symbolized God dwelling among His people.

Blessings and Warnings

  • Blessings for obedience: Prosperity and protection (Leviticus 26:1-13).
  • Curses for disobedience: Punishment and exile (Deuteronomy 28:15-68).

Purpose of the Covenant

  • To establish Israel as God’s "chosen people" (Exodus 19:5-6).
  • To provide laws for living a holy life and demonstrating God’s justice to the world.

Key Verses

  1. Exodus 19:5-6 - The proposal of the covenant: “You shall be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.”
  2. Exodus 24:7-8 - The covenant is ratified with blood: “This is the blood of the covenant.”
  3. Deuteronomy 11:1 - Call to love and obey God’s commandments.
  4. Leviticus 26:44-45 - God remains faithful even when Israel disobeys.

Significance of the Old Covenant

  • The First Covenant laid the foundation for Israel’s laws and religious practices.
  • It emphasized faithfulness, obedience, and the consequences of sin.
  • It paved the way for the New Covenant through Jesus Christ, fulfilling God’s ultimate plan for humanity.

2. The New Covenant of God

Bringing the Bible to Life!

The New Covenant, also called the Second Covenant, represents a transformative relationship between God and humanity. Established through Jesus Christ, it offers grace, forgiveness, and a direct connection with God. This covenant marks a shift from the law-based First Covenant to a heart-centered spiritual agreement.

Background of the New Covenant
The New Covenant was first promised in the Old Testament, especially in Jeremiah 31:31-34. God foretold a future where His law would be written on hearts, not stone tablets, signifying a closer, more personal relationship.

Introduction of the New Covenant
Jesus introduced the New Covenant during the Last Supper. He used bread and wine to symbolize His body and blood, signifying His sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins (Matthew 26:28). This act fulfilled Old Testament prophecies about a Redeemer.

Core Elements of the New Covenant

  1. Forgiveness of Sins: Unlike the First Covenant, which required ongoing animal sacrifices, the New Covenant provides permanent forgiveness through Jesus’ death on the cross.
  2. Direct Relationship with God: Believers have access to God through the Holy Spirit, who guides and strengthens them.
  3. Law Written on Hearts: God’s law becomes internal, influencing actions through transformed hearts rather than external regulations.

Purpose of the New Covenant
The New Covenant restores the broken relationship between God and humanity caused by sin. It allows believers to know God personally and experience His grace, making spiritual transformation possible.

Universal Appeal
Unlike the First Covenant, which was specific to Israel, the New Covenant is for everyone—regardless of nationality, race, or status. This inclusivity fulfills Old Testament prophecies about the nations turning to God.

Significance of the New Covenant
The New Covenant fulfills promises made in the Old Testament, shifting the focus from external rituals to inner transformation and faith in Jesus Christ. It demonstrates God’s unchanging commitment to humanity and His desire for personal relationships with His people.

Modern Implications
For today’s believers, the New Covenant emphasizes:

  • Grace: Salvation is a gift, not earned by works.
  • Faith: A relationship with God is built on trust in Jesus, not adherence to laws.
  • Love and Forgiveness: Mirroring God’s grace in relationships reflects the New Covenant’s principles.

"Through the old covenant, the need for Christ was revealed; through the new, salvation is accomplished."

3. Role of Blood in Both Covenants

Bringing the Bible to Life!

The blood of Jesus Christ is vital to understanding the Old (First) and New Covenants. It fulfills the sacrificial requirements of the Old Covenant while establishing the New Covenant, centered on forgiveness, grace, and eternal salvation.

Blood in the Old Covenant

  • Purpose: Blood was essential for atonement and purification in the Old Covenant.
  • Practices: Animal sacrifices were performed regularly, particularly on the Day of Atonement, to symbolically cover sins and purify worshippers.

Key Verses:

Exodus 12:7, 13 - The blood of the Passover lamb marked the Israelites’ homes, sparing them from the plague.

Leviticus 17:11 - Blood makes atonement for the soul and symbolizes life.

Exodus 24:8 - Blood was sprinkled on the altar and people to seal the covenant with God.

Leviticus 16:14-15 - Blood was used in the Most Holy Place during the Day of Atonement as a sin offering.

Leviticus 4:18 - Priests used blood during sin offerings to purify the altar and atone for the people.

Limitations: These sacrifices had to be repeated often and only provided temporary atonement for sins.

Blood in the New Covenant

  • Introduction by Jesus: At the Last Supper, Jesus announced the New Covenant, stating that His blood would be poured out for the forgiveness of sins. His crucifixion fulfilled this promise.

Transformational Effects:
Fulfillment of the Old Covenant: Jesus' sacrifice replaced repeated animal offerings with a permanent atonement for sin.

A New Relationship: The New Covenant focuses on forgiveness and internal transformation rather than external laws.

Direct Access to God: Jesus’ blood cleanses believers, granting personal access to God without priestly mediation.

Universal Redemption: Unlike the Old Covenant, which was specific to Israel, the New Covenant extends salvation to all people.

Key Verses:

Matthew 26:28 - Jesus said, "This is my blood of the covenant, poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins."

Luke 22:20 - Jesus called the cup "the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you."

Hebrews 9:12 - Christ entered the Most Holy Place once for all by His own blood, securing eternal redemption.

Hebrews 10:19 - Believers can now approach God with confidence through the blood of Jesus.

1 John 1:7 - The blood of Jesus purifies us from all sin.

Modern Implications

Sacrifice Demonstrates Love: Jesus’ selfless sacrifice serves as a model for how believers should live with compassion and service to others.

Forgiveness Transforms: The power of Jesus' blood to erase sin shows the profound impact of grace and forgiveness.

Hope for Eternal Life: Jesus’ resurrection, made possible by His sacrifice, offers assurance of redemption and a new beginning for all who believe.

The Blood in Both Covenants

Francis Schaeffer (1912–1984):
"The old covenant was a shadow of the better things to come in the new covenant."

William Gurnall (1617–1679):
"God’s justice shines in the old covenant; His mercy radiates in the new."

J.C. Ryle (1816–1900):
"The contrast between the covenants shows God’s justice in the old and His mercy in the new."

Thomas Aquinas (1225–1274):
"The old covenant was written in stone; the new covenant is written on the heart."

George Whitefield (1714–1770):
"The old covenant pointed to Christ; the new covenant delivers His promise."
